Knitwear & Sweater Buttons — Heat-Stable Bodies, Yarn-Safe Holes

Knitwear is the only garment category where the button must survive steam, blocking and folding — and where a heavy button drags the whole front panel out of shape. We supply sweater and cardigan buttons designed for that: heat-stable bodies, light weight and hole edges that do not cut yarn.

The failure that costs money

The pressing table is where knitwear buttons go to die.

Sweaters are pressed, steamed and blocked after making-up. A button with residual moulding stress — or one that absorbed moisture in the warehouse — will craze or crack right on the pressing table. The garment is finished, the button cracks, and now somebody is unpicking buttons from 2,000 finished cardigans.

The second failure is slower: a heavy button on a fine gauge front hangs the placket out of shape. By the third wear the cardigan dips where the button sits and the whole garment reads as cheap. Weight is a spec on knitwear, not a detail.

And the hole edge matters more than anywhere else. A sharp or burred hole saws the yarn every time the button moves, and the failure appears as a ladder — which the customer will blame on the knit, not the button.

Before bulk, not after claims

How we lock it down before bulk

Buttons destined for knitwear are heat tested to your finishing temperature — pressed, not just heated — and moisture checked before packing, so the craze happens in our workshop if it is going to happen. The record stays with the batch number.

Weight is specified per size. For fine gauge fronts we recommend lighter bodies and shallower rims that sit flat without pulling the panel — the difference is grams, and grams are visible on a sweater.

Hole edges are finished smooth and checked, because the hole is where yarn goes to fail. Production team has 28 years in trims; knitwear is where that experience shows most in choices the eye cannot make from a photo.

Buyer questions

Knitwear — FAQ

Will the buttons survive steam pressing?
We heat test to your finishing temperature — pressed, not just warmed — and check moisture before packing, with results recorded by batch number.
Buttons keep cracking on the pressing table. Why?
Usually residual moulding stress or absorbed moisture. We screen for both before bulk and can send pressed samples from the actual lot.
What weight should a sweater button be?
It depends on gauge — fine gauge fronts need lighter bodies. Weight is specified per size in our quote so the placket keeps its shape.
Do hole edges really matter?
Yes. A sharp hole edge saws the yarn and the failure appears as a ladder. Hole finishing is checked on every batch.
