What goes wrong
Three failures we test for before bulk
- Iridescence dies under heavy coating. Over-polished or over-coated blanks go flat and grey — the garment loses the depth the designer chose shell for.
- Thin blanks crack at the hole. Black-lip runs thin at the rim; ungraded lots crack when the needle passes and you discover it at buttoning time.
- Piece-to-piece tone swing. Dark shell swings from green-black to blue-grey; without an approved range, lot two argues with lot one.
Each of these is a claim on your P&L, not a technical detail. We test the condition your care label specifies and put the result in writing before production starts.
Buyer questions
Black lip shell — FAQ
Is black-lip shell dyed or natural?
Both exist — natural iridescence shows best on uncoated styles; dyed black is available for uniform programmes. We confirm which at quotation.
Can the flower-carved faces be reproduced exactly?
Carving depth is set by tooling; we send a physical approval sample and hold the tool so repeat orders match.
How does black-lip differ from imitation dark shell?
Real black-lip shows a living play of colour under light that resin cannot copy — and it carries the natural variation we help you approve as a range, not a single tone.
